A century ago, American poet Vachel LIndsay’s poem put it perfectly:
This is the sin against the Holy Ghost: —
To speak of bloody power as right divine,
And call on God to guard each vile chief’s house,
And for such chiefs, turn men to wolves and swine:—
To go forth killing in White Mercy’s name,
Making the trenches stink with spattered brains,
Tearing the nerves and arteries apart,
Sowing with flesh the unreaped golden plains.
In any Church’s name, to sack fair towns,
And turn each home into a screaming sty,
To make the little children fugitive,
And have their mothers for a quick death cry,—
This is the sin against the Holy Ghost:
This is the sin no purging can atone:—
To send forth rapine in the name of Christ:—
To set the face, and make the heart a stone.
Happy Birthday Jim. You hadn’t published in a while, and I was worried. But you’re back. Good news! I remember reciting Lindsay’s “The Congo” from memory in the 10th grade.
Today, I am not sure, however, whose blood is being spilled, and who is doing the spilling. If you are referring to Gaza, the world is watching in horror. If you are referring to the Donbas, well, it’s not for nothing that place is known as “the blood land”.
Happy Birthday to you as well. Who knows where the time goes? To your point, while Lindsay’s imagery specifically reflects his horror of World War I, the reality of the “Christian” right’s fever dream is horrific in its own way: the cruelty of dooming 14 million people (over the next 5 years) to untimely deaths by the gutting of USAID, the stripping of health care from millions of Americans of their health care, the increase in death tolls from natural disasters due to climate change denial and the suicidal slashing of NOAA and FEMA, the creation of get-sick-and-die camps like Alligator Auschwitz, the attempts to transform the American military into a cruel and demented dictator’s private army, the gleeful unleashing of government violence on American citizens, the condemnation of immigrants to inhuman conditions and even torture, the systematic destruction of a reliable system of disease prevention and control, the cynical and calculated encouragement of hate speech and hate groups with their inevitable deadly fruits, and the Administration’s complicity with Netanyahu’s genocide in Gaza—so many bloody acts committed by hateful people, some of whom wear crosses over their hearts of stone.
